1/1/2020 5/100 Porsche Boxster
Now for the blandest update to the Porsche Boxster casting, introduced in 1999 in silver with a brown interior; for 2000? Silver with a black interior, with detailed rear lights. The Boxster was a fresh breath of life to the struggling Porsche brand when it was introduced in 1998 and is still a successful model even today, and Matchbox did a great job with the body and the detailed headlights, front and side scoops, and taillights with BOXSTER script on the trunk and central exhaust tip. The working suspension does a great job in making this roadster fun to drive in the corners even if the casting is a bit on the big side. The chassis does a good job showing off the details including the mid-mounted flat-six engine (and is the only way to access the engine in the real car), two trunks front and rear, and a flush-fitting tonneau cover that sits behind two rollbars. The interior has a nicely detailed dashboard, 4-spoke steering wheel, floor shifter, and even gridded floor mats, and this is also my first version with the Matchbox 2000 logo. The logo is produced in the first 10,000 of each 1-100 casting in various location and is offered worldwide, not exactly a chase but close enough as I was only able to find at least a quarter of the 100 models offered with the logo and to add to that this Boxster was the first 2000 Matchbox model to start off the long journey that year. Also to note was another Porsche that would not be in the U.S. for a few more years, but was offered in the ROW line: the fantastic 1999 Porsche 911 cabriolet, and as for the Boxster it got the working suspension removed this granting a taller ride height with visible wheel gaps, yet still had some nice clean variations to keep the charm of this casting.
