1/13/20 17/100 1999 Ford Mustang GT coupe
Remember the convertible mentioned earlier for the 1999 Mustang? Well, here’s the coupe bodystyle making its first regular line introduction in 2000 and it’s very simple: The first release was the 1999 Premiere First Shot edition as a red coupe and the bare metal version below it shows how the roof is done: The windshield continues all the way to the rear window to form the coupe roofline, then paint is added to make it look more like a coupe. This is a common technique used for this generation of Mustang’s from Hot Wheels to Johnny Lightning and it saves having to do two different toolings for each bodystyle. Some would disagree with this setup as a cheap way to cut costs, but at least Matchbox did a great job with the paint on this coupe as it does not give any clues that the paint is different than the body, at least on this green version with front and rear lighting details and a nice tan interior. Other than that the coupe has the same details as the convertible and looks much better with the hardtop, though both bodystyles have been offered for a few more years in the Matchbox line.
